Weight Loss Clinic in Highfields
Mounjaro and Wegovy, prescribed by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber and dispensed on-site. Two miles from Highfields, free initial consultation.
Real weight loss, prescribed properly — two miles from Highfields.
Highfields residents don't need to wait months for an NHS weight management referral to access GLP-1 medication. Clarendon Pharmacy on Welford Road runs a pharmacist-led weight loss clinic just two miles south-west of Highfields — about eight minutes by car, with free patient parking on-site.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are prescription-only medicines that need a qualified prescriber. The clinic is led by Mohammed Kolia (MPharm, IP), a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber, which means we can assess, prescribe, dispense and review your treatment all in one place. No relay through a GP, no separate online prescriber sitting in another city.
Treatment starts with a free, no-obligation consultation. We'll check your BMI, run through your medical history, your goals, and confirm whether GLP-1 treatment is clinically appropriate. NICE recommends these medicines for adults with a BMI of 30 or above (or 27.5 if you have a weight-related condition like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnoea). For South Asian, Black African and Black Caribbean populations — a significant proportion of Highfields residents — NICE recommends adjusted lower BMI thresholds (BMI 27.5 instead of 30) because cardiovascular risk emerges at lower BMI in these populations.
After your first prescription you'll book back monthly for a check-in — weight, side effects, dose escalation if appropriate, and your next month's supply. Most patients see clear progress within 12–16 weeks. No subscription, no contract — you stop when you're ready.
GLP-1 weight loss treatment for Highfields residents
Highfields has a substantial South Asian population, which carries direct clinical relevance for GLP-1 eligibility assessment. NICE specifically recommends adjusted lower BMI thresholds for South Asian, Black African and Black Caribbean populations — 27.5 instead of 30 — because cardiovascular risk and type 2 diabetes risk emerge at lower BMI. This means many Highfields adults who don't appear to be classically overweight on the white-population scale still meet criteria for GLP-1 treatment.
Clarendon Pharmacy is two miles south-west of Highfields, about eight minutes by car via Welford Road. Mohammed Kolia (MPharm, IP) is a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber. Assessment, prescription, dispensing and monthly reviews all in one place.
NICE eligibility — adjusted for ethnicity
| Population | Standard BMI threshold | + comorbidity threshold |
|---|---|---|
| White European | 30+ | 27.5+ |
| South Asian, Black African, Black Caribbean | 27.5+ | 23+ (in some clinical contexts) |
This adjustment is medically important. South Asian adults at BMI 27 carry equivalent cardiovascular risk to white European adults at BMI 30. The original NICE thresholds were derived from predominantly white European trial populations and underestimate risk in other ethnicities.
NHS Tier 3 services often apply the standard (white European) thresholds rather than the adjusted ones, which means many South Asian adults eligible for GLP-1 treatment under best-practice NICE guidance are denied access through NHS routes. We follow the most recent NICE adjustments at every consultation.
How do Mounjaro and Wegovy work?
Both mimic GLP-1, a hormone naturally released after eating that signals fullness and slows stomach emptying. Mounjaro additionally acts on GIP, making it a dual GLP-1/GIP agonist. You feel full sooner on smaller meals, hungry less often between meals, food cravings reduce substantially, satiety lasts longer.
Mounjaro vs Wegovy
In head-to-head trials, Mounjaro tends to produce greater average weight loss:
- Mounjaro (15mg weekly) — SURMOUNT-1: average 21% body-weight reduction over 72 weeks.
- Wegovy (2.4mg weekly) — STEP-1: average 15% body-weight reduction over 68 weeks.
Individual response varies. Some patients respond better to Wegovy, or tolerate it better. Independent prescribing means we can switch you between products.
Type 2 diabetes prevention and reversal
The South Asian population has approximately 2.5x the risk of type 2 diabetes compared to the white European average, with onset typically 10 years earlier. GLP-1 medications were originally developed for type 2 diabetes management — their weight-loss indication came later, but the diabetes benefits remain. For Highfields adults with prediabetes (HbA1c 42–47 mmol/mol) or recent-onset type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 treatment can frequently bring HbA1c back below the diabetes threshold within 6–12 months, especially when paired with the weight loss.
What to expect month-by-month
Weeks 1–4: modest appetite reduction, possible nausea, 1–3kg loss. Weeks 5–8: appetite suppression pronounced, side effects settling, weight loss accelerates. Months 3–6: dose escalates to maintenance, 5–12% loss typical. Months 6–12: 15–20% total weight loss common; metabolic markers improve substantially.
Side effects worth knowing
Most common (>10%): nausea, indigestion, constipation or diarrhoea, weeks 1–8. Less common: gallbladder problems (rapid weight loss raises gallstone risk); pancreatitis (rare, severe abdominal pain is a red flag); thyroid effects (contraindicated in medullary thyroid cancer history or MEN-2). Lifestyle alongside treatment
GLP-1 medications work best alongside lifestyle changes: strength training 2–3x weekly preserves muscle mass; protein-forward eating supports satiety; 7,500–10,000 daily steps achievable on appetite-suppressed days; adequate sleep prevents ghrelin elevation. South Asian dietary patterns can be adapted to support weight loss without abandoning cultural food preferences — we can advise on protein-forward modifications to common dishes during consultations.
How much does treatment cost?
Pricing varies by dose. We charge for medication only — the initial consultation, monthly reviews, and injection demonstration are all included. Full monthly figure given at consultation. No subscription, no auto-billing, no contract.
