Otex, olive oil and home ear wax softening — what actually works

For many cases of mild wax buildup, the right drops for 3–7 days are enough. Here's the pharmacist view of what actually works at home, what doesn't, and when to escalate.

The right drops for a week often beat a procedure.

Not all ear wax buildup needs a clinic visit. Many cases of mild to moderate buildup can be managed at home with the right softening drops over a week or so. The drops break down impacted wax, often allowing the ear to self-clear naturally without needing microsuction or irrigation. For those that don't fully clear, the softening also makes any subsequent procedure faster and more comfortable.

This guide is the pharmacist view of home ear wax softening: which products actually work, how to use them properly, how long to try before escalating, what to avoid (cotton buds, ear candles), and the symptoms that mean skip the home treatment and book a microsuction appointment directly.

It's general information, not personal medical advice. For persistent symptoms, ear pain, or any concerning features, see a clinician.

FAQ

The questions patients ask most often about home ear wax softening.

If your question isn't here, give us a call and we'll talk it through.

For most adults: pharmaceutical-grade olive oil drops are the gentlest and the standard first-line option. Use 2–3 drops twice daily for 5–7 days. For harder or more impacted wax, urea hydrogen peroxide drops (Otex) work faster but can be slightly irritating. Sodium bicarbonate drops are an alternative for sensitive ears. Avoid hydrogen peroxide alone or alcohol-based drops as first-line — they can irritate the canal.
A reasonable trial is 5–7 days of consistent twice-daily softening. If symptoms (hearing loss, pressure, blocked feeling) haven't resolved by then, the wax probably needs mechanical removal. Don't keep using drops indefinitely — prolonged use can irritate the ear canal.
No. Cotton buds push wax deeper, can scratch the canal, and can occasionally perforate the eardrum. The 'don't put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear' rule applies. If you must clean the outer ear, wipe with a damp cloth on the outer auricle only — not in the canal.
Ear candles don't work — the residue people see is the candle itself, not wax. They carry burn risks and have caused ear injuries. Home ear vacuum devices have no real evidence of working and can cause inner ear pressure issues. Save your money.
No. Pain, discharge (especially yellow, green, or blood-stained), fever, or sudden hearing loss are not normal wax symptoms and may indicate infection or another problem. Skip home treatment and book a clinical assessment. Putting drops into an infected or perforated ear can worsen things.
