Ear Wax Removal in South Wigston
Microsuction in 20 minutes — instant relief, no syringing, no mess. Three miles from South Wigston at Clarendon Pharmacy on Welford Road.
Hearing dulled, ears blocked, that uncomfortable pressure? We sort it in one visit.
If your ears feel blocked, your hearing has gone dull, or that pressure won't shift — chances are it's wax. The good news for South Wigston residents: microsuction is fast, gentle, and gives most people instant relief, and Clarendon Pharmacy is just three miles north on Welford Road — about 10 minutes along Saffron Lane. No syringing, no water flushing, no mess. The whole appointment takes around 20 minutes.
Clarendon Pharmacy runs daily microsuction appointments led by clinicians trained in ENT-grade ear examination. We use professional Tympahealth suction equipment — the same kit ENT departments use — to gently remove wax under direct vision through a binocular microscope. You can SEE what's coming out, and you can hear the difference the moment the canal clears.
Most appointments are one-and-done. Some patients with very impacted wax need a follow-up to soften the remainder using olive oil drops for 3–5 days, then return. We'll tell you on the day if that's likely. Same-day availability for most weeks.
NHS ear wax removal services were largely decommissioned across England in 2019 — most GP surgeries no longer offer it, and where it IS available the wait can be months. Private microsuction is the routine route now. Book online or walk in, and you'll be hearing clearly the same day.
Microsuction ear wax removal for South Wigston residents
South Wigston residents have a microsuction clinic three miles north on Welford Road — about ten minutes by car along Saffron Lane. Same-day appointments most days. Free patient parking on-site.
The South Wigston demographic skews toward longer NHS waits (Integrated Care Board audiology lists serving this area are at the longer end of the 12–24 month range), and toward patients who have actively been waiting on NHS lists before deciding to pay privately. Our role is to remove the wax in 20 minutes for the price of a private appointment, rather than the patient waiting 18+ months for a free NHS appointment that may not happen in the timeframe.
What is microsuction?
Microsuction is the professional clinical method for removing impacted ear wax. A clinician examines your ear canal through a binocular microscope and uses a small, precise suction wand to gently lift wax out under direct vision. No water, no flushing, no mess. Same method ENT consultants use in hospital outpatient clinics.
Why did the NHS stop offering this in 2019?
NHS England's 2019 commissioning guidance moved ear wax management out of primary care, with audiology nominated as the appropriate setting. In practice, NHS audiology waits for ear wax in most Integrated Care Boards now run 12–24+ months. Many GP surgeries removed ear-care equipment entirely; the nurses who used to do syringing were retrained or retired without replacement.
The procedure didn't get less safe, less effective, or less needed — it just moved out of NHS primary care. If you can wait 12–24 months for NHS audiology, that's still an option (ask your GP for a referral). For most patients with symptomatic wax, paying privately for same-week microsuction is the practical route.
How much does microsuction cost?
Pricing is published on our booking page — the appointment fee includes the otoscopic exam, the procedure itself, and the post-procedure check. No hidden costs. We'll tell you at booking exactly what you'll pay.
Why is wax building up?
Wax is produced by glands in the outer ear canal as part of normal ear hygiene. It self-cleans for most people most of the time. It builds up when the natural outward migration is disrupted by:
- Cotton buds (the single biggest cause)
- Hearing aids
- In-ear headphones / earbuds
- Narrow or hairy ear canals (genetic, more common with age)
- Increased wax production (often older adults)
- Previous ear surgery or skin conditions
When should I book microsuction?
When it's causing symptoms: dulled hearing, pressure or fullness, mild discomfort or itching, new tinnitus, hearing aids whistling. Ear pain with fever, discharge or sudden hearing loss is not just wax — those need clinical assessment first.
What happens at the appointment?
20 minutes total (30 first visit). Brief intake. Otoscopic exam with video screen so you can see what we see. Microsuction under the binocular microscope, 5–10 minutes per ear. Post-procedure check. The main sensation is the loud suction noise close to the eardrum (like a vacuum cleaner held near your ear). Clinician works slowly, stops if you feel pain.
Microsuction safety
Microsuction is the safest professional method for ear wax removal. No water means no risk of pushing wax further in, no infection risk from contaminated water, suitable for perforated eardrums (with extra caution) and post-surgery patients. Water-based methods (syringing, irrigation) are 'blind' and carry these risks.
Hearing-aid users
Routine 6-monthly microsuction is sensible. The aid contributes to wax buildup, accumulated wax reduces aid performance and can damage the receiver. Bring your aids; we'll check fit after wax removal.
Aftercare and prevention
Keep water out of your ears for 24 hours. Hearing should be immediately clearer. Prevention: never cotton buds; 2–3 drops olive oil weekly if wax-prone; routine 6–12 monthly cleaning if you're a hearing aid or in-ear headphone user.

Information on this page is for general guidance. Suitability for microsuction depends on individual ear-canal anatomy and history. An otoscopic exam at your appointment determines what's appropriate.
